The history of BBC television idents begins in the early 1950s, when the BBC first displayed a logo between programmes to identify its service. As new technology has become available, these devices have evolved from simple still black and white images to the sophisticated full colour short films seen today. With the arrival of digital services in the United Kingdom, and with them many more new channels, branding is perceived by broadcasters to be much more important, meaning that idents need to stand out from the competition.
This is the orignial first ever BBC ident picture. The typical black and white image based around the idea of 'bat wings'
This is one of the recent pictures of the recent bbc ident.
The idents have developed more as the technology used has been improved, now we can use multiple ways of filming/animating and editing the final products.

How i'll film our video...
I'll be using a flip video camera to record our short clip. They are small but big in quality and the outcome is in HD. They are quick and easy to use as you simply press the record button on the front and thats it. The camera has a flip out USB on the side for easy access to download your video easilly. It has an LCD screen for clear vision. There is access for a tripod mount. It also has a TV output and a HDMI miniport.
BBC TWO Paint Ident V1 - Final Day
I like the idea of this ident because the paint effect looks very good and because its slowed down you can see how the paint explodes over the 2 and how the drops expand. I like this idea for our ident but i think the powder ident is more effective and looks more creative.
The music in the video's are all mainly standard tunes and they don't have singing in them. Most of them use the kind of tranquil sound that is used in this video.
Assignment aims
Assignment limitations:
You must feature a number ‘ 2 ‘ within your ident (size and quantity can vary) (No2 template available from tutor) and it and all associated props must be created to a very high standard. Remember that this college has a rich variety of diverse departments such as 3D, Metalwork, Joinery, Painting and Decorating , etc, you will be expected to take full advantage of these facilities. Please ensure that you are polite and show patience when contacting tutors in other areas of the college.
The ident must last for approx 10- 30 seconds (approx), And be saved as a .Mov file. Playable in Quicktime.
The sound must be ambient in nature and appropriate for your theme, also no voiceover, or inappropriate music.
Remember your idea MUST be practically possible .If it isn’t then your idea may fail .So as a team you must think it through, planning is essential along with good time management. You must record all light meter readings from all your studio sets and record on a Studio Lighting Plan (file on the studio computer) and photograph an overview of all the set and lighting and include this in your sketchbooks.
Assignment aims:
- To develop understanding of studio / location techniques for moving imagery media productions.
- To develop design methods, techniques, and technologies.
- To produce experimental studio / day light lighting techniques.
- To develop skills when filming with a DV digital video camera and tripod.
- To develop skills when editing with video software and audio techniques.
We have 6 weeks to prepare, produce and edit our ident.
New Assignment - BBC 2 Ident
In this assignment we will be making a short film to produce as a BBC 2 Ident. We will be working in groups and each person will have a specific role. My role is the 'Cameraman' i will be shooting the video but ill help out with everyones jobs where i can. The other roles are lighting, prop stylist, editor and set designer.
Our initial idea is to use the idea of the original BBC 2 ident where the the number 2 drops into dust and the video is slowed down so it creates a good effect of the dust rising and spreading out. Our version will be similar to this but the number 2 will be dropped into a pile of skittles, we think this will look colorful and effective.
Roles:
Molly - Team leader & Set designer
Me - Filming
Sammy - Prop stylist
Tish - Lighting
Jordon - Editor
